Running in the winter: sure, but wear the right shoes!

Running lovers in Quebec are lucky in that they may practice their sport all year if they are not frightened by cold and ice! Running in the winter allows you to keep in shape while taking advantage of the beauty (and obstacles) of the season, but you must be adequately equipped, particularly in terms of running shoes. Read these recommendations to help you pick the finest winter running shoes so you can get the most out of your winter runs while minimizing the chance of falling and getting hurt.

Make sure your feet don’t get wet

Winter in Quebec is marked by a wide range of weather conditions, from freezing rain to heavy snow. In fact, it’s not unusual to encounter a variety of circumstances on a single run! Weather resistant shoes are strongly suggested for all levels of runners, whether you are a novice jogger or an experienced runner.

Running shoes with waterproofing keep your feet dry and prevent you from feeling chilly or uncomfortable.

The upper is the section of the shoe that is visible from the outside. It is generally composed of cloth. A waterproof top shields the foot from the elements while keeping water out of the shoe. If you’re jogging in wet or mushy snow, this is particularly crucial.
Another issue to consider is perspiration, because we sweat from our feet even when the temperature is below zero. The more waterproof a shoe is, the less it will be able to evacuate sweat. As a result, you must find the proper balance between waterproofing and breathability based on your needs. If you have an athlete’s foot, look for a waterproof shoe that wicks moisture away.

Choose stable shoes

Whether you run in the city or in the country, on the road or on the trail, a strong shoe with adequate grip for the terrain is essential. Choose soles with built-in lugs that grip the ground firmly to avoid slipping or falling.

For improved traction on snow, running shoes built for winter use include deep, spaced cleats. The deep spikes keep you from sliding or falling, and the wider spacing makes snow removal a breeze when you’re out running.

Consider buying deeper crampons that you can put into your running shoes if you’re going out in really icy conditions.

Warm up before running

Running, like any other physical exercise, needs careful planning in terms of both equipment and physical condition. This is especially true during the cold months. Because of the cold, wind, and unpredictable weather, running in the winter needs more equipment than running in the summer. With the  danger of falling or suffering frostbite, it’s preferable not to take any chances.

  • Make sure you have everything you’ll need (hat, coat or jacket, gloves, etc.). Also, take this moment to inspect your shoes’ soles for excessive wear.
  • It is critical to warm up before venturing out into the cold. When it’s really cold outside, we recommend taking a bit longer to warm up all of your muscles, around 15 minutes. This reduces the likelihood of damage as well as the onset of pain. Similarly, make sure you’re not in discomfort, whether it’s from your feet or anything else.
  • Remember to stretch when you get home! Remove any wet or damp clothing and stay in a warm environment for as long as possible to enable your muscles and tendons to relax. It will take around 10 minutes to complete.
