Laser treatment for nails

Laser treatment for nails

Laser treatment is used to destroy onychomycosis located under toenails.

Onychomycosis toenail infection, commonly called toenail fungus, is an infection that is very difficult to treat with topical antifungal products. Given its nature, the toenail does not allow other treatments to reach the fungus hiding under it, unlike laser treatment, which passes through the nail plate.

How toenail laser treatment works

The laser device emits light energy that is invisible to the naked eye directly into the nail, through the nail and on the skin surface around your toenail. The pigments of the fungal organisms absorb this energy and, through a heating process, the now damaged fungi are eventually destroyed.

A few facts:

  • Treatment may cause a sensation of warmth or pain
  • Your podiatrist can adjust the intensity of the laser according to your sensitivity to pain
  • Local anaesthesia is not required
  • Fungi can be completely eradicated after 2 to 6 treatments, depending on the severity of the infection
  • The laser treatment allows the nail to grow back to its normal shape before infection occurred.

Laser treatment process

The nail laser treatment sessions last approximately 30 minutes, and must be repeated every 6 to 12 weeks until the fungi disappear completely.

Proper preparation of the nails is a crucial step in the process. The laser must penetrate to a depth of about 4 mm into the tissues, and the nail of the infected toe must be as thin as possible. That’s why your podiatrist will thin down your nail to a thickness of 1 mm.

Laser treatment effectiveness

While studies show that many patients who have chosen laser treatment see significant improvement in the appearance of their toenails within 12 months following treatment, this is not only attributable to the laser. In fact, a large part of the success is based on the hygiene habits of patients.

Here are a few basic tips to follow:

  • Wear open-toed shoes whenever possible
  • Choose shoes that breathe
  • Keep your feet dry
  • Avoid getting your feet wet
  • Avoid wearing nail

Your podiatrist can help you determine the best preventive measures to adopt to keep your feet healthy.
